Auch die Weihnachtskrippe, die mit dem typischen Fischerboot "Luzzu" aus Malta an die Flüchtlingsproblematik erinnert, wurde eingeweiht.

Weihnachtsstimmung im Vatikan: Am Freitagabend wurden erstmals die Lichter des 25 Meter hohen Weihnachtsbaums vor dem Petersdom angezündet. Auch die Weihnachtskrippe, die mit dem typischen Fischerboot "Luzzu" aus Malta an die Flüchtlingsproblematik erinnert, wurde eingeweiht.

Die Krippe ist ein Geschenk des Erzbistums und der Regierung von Malta. Freitag früh waren Mitglieder aus den Gemeinden zur Audienz geladen, die den Weihnachtsbaum und die Krippe auf dem Petersplatz gespendet haben. "In der schmerzhaften Erfahrung der Migranten, unsere Brüder und Schwestern, erkennen wir die des Jesuskindes wieder", sagte der Papst. Immerhin habe auch Jesus im Moment seiner Geburt keine Herberge gehabt.

Franziskus bedankte sich für Baum und Krippe. Die 25 Meter hohe Fichte kommt aus den Wäldern des Trentino. Der Papst dankte auch den Kindern, die den Baum mit Unterstützung der Lene-Thun-Stiftung geschmückt haben. Die Stiftung belebt die Arbeitsräume der Keramik-Therapie in verschiedenen Krankenhäusern.

Der Baum wurde bereits Ende November vom Trentino nach Rom gebracht. Die Krippe des Künstlers Manwel Grech wurde erst vor wenigen Tagen fertiggestellt worden. Die Figuren kommen aus Malta, so wie auch das gesamte Szenario.
