Sambaschulen begannen Schaulaufen bei Karneval in Rio de Janeiro

Insgesamt ziehen am Sonntag und Montag 14 Sambaschulen durch das 700 Meter lange Sambodrom.

Beim weltberühmten Karneval von Rio de Janeiro hat das Schaulaufen der Sambaschulen begonnen. Als erste Gruppe zog am Sonntagabend Império Serrano durch das Sambodrom, die Karnevalsarena der brasilianischen Millionenmetropole. Wegen heftiger Regenfälle begann die spektakuläre Parade mit dreiviertelstündiger Verspätung - der Feierwut der Tänzer, Musiker und Zuschauer tat das aber keinen Abbruch.

Insgesamt ziehen am Sonntag und Montag 14 Sambaschulen durch das 700 Meter lange Sambodrom, das Platz für 72.000 Zuschauer bietet. Bei dem prestigeträchtigen Wettbewerb treten die großen Sambaschulen mit jeweils tausenden Mitgliedern gegeneinander an.

Mit großer Spannung wird der Auftritt der Schule Portela erwartet. Der Rekordhalter mit 22 Titeln zieht am Montagabend durch das Sambodrom, die Kostüme hat der französische Stardesigner Jean-Paul Gaultier entworfen. Im vergangenen Jahr hatte die Sambaschule Beija-Flor den Wettbewerb gewonnen.

Das ausschweifende Treiben in der brasilianischen Millionenmetropole findet dieses Jahr erstmals unter der Präsidentschaft des ultrarechten Politikers Jair Bolsonaro statt.

Der Startschuss für den Karneval war am Freitagabend gegeben worden. Wie im Vorjahr verweigerte der evangelikale Bürgermeister von Rio, Marcelo Crivella, seine Teilnahme an der traditionellen Eröffnungszeremonie. Der evangelikale Politiker ist wegen seines Glaubens als Gegner des aus der katholischen Tradition stammenden Karnevals bekannt, die finanzielle Unterstützung für die Feierlichkeiten strich er um die Hälfte zusammen - und das, obwohl die Feierlichkeiten rund 1,5 Millionen Touristen aus dem In- und Ausland anlocken.
