Es ist ein Wochenende, an dem gleich mehrere - allerdings ganz unterschiedliche - bedeutende Entdeckungen bekannt werden: Nach dem Sensationsfund im steirischen Admont - der möglicherweise älteste Text in deutscher Sprache - melden jetzt ägyptische Archäologen, dass sie südlich von Kairo mindestens 17 Mumien entdeckt haben. Es handle sich aber nicht um die Leichname von ehemaligen Königen.

Die menschlichen Überreste seien in einem Grab in der Provinz Al-Minja etwa 260 Kilometer südlich der Hauptstadt gefunden worden, teilte das Antikenministerium am Samstag mit. Einige von ihnen seien noch vollständig intakt. Zudem seien Särge aus Stein und Ton, antike Inschriften und auch Tiergräber in dem drei Kilometer langen, unterirdischen Gewölbe gefunden worden:

Egyptian archaeologists have discovered 17 non-royal mummies in the desert catacombs, an "unprecedented" find for the area south of Cairo, the antiquities ministry announced.

Den Angaben zufolge stamme das Gewölbe, das 1931 entdeckt wurde, aus der griechisch-römischen Zeit in Ägypten, die von 332 v. Chr. bis 395 n. Chr. reicht.

Bereits vor einem Jahr seien Radarmessungen vorgenommen worden, durch die die Entdeckung möglich geworden sei.
2017 sei ein Meilenstein für archäologische Entdeckungen in Ägypten, sagte Antikenminister Chaled-al-Anani: "Es ist, als ob unsere Vorfahren eine Nachricht senden, damit der Tourismus wieder mit vollem Schwung zurückkommt."
Schon im April waren in einer 3500 Jahre alten Grabkammer in der südägyptischen Stadt Luxor mindestens acht Mumien gefunden worden. Im März legte ein deutsch-ägyptisches Archäologenteam eine acht Meter große Königsstatue im Osten Kairos fei.
Hoffnung auch für den Tourismus
Nach einigen Anschlägen, etwa auf einen russischen Ferienflieger über der ägyptischen Sinai-Halbinsel 2015, war der ohnehin schon fragile ägyptische Tourismus, der für das Land enorm wichtig ist, eingebrochen. Die Urlaubsgebiete in Ägypten gelten aber als weitgehend sicher. Die
Regierung hofft, durch archäologische Entdeckungen das Interesse an den kulturellen Stätten der alten Ägypter im Land wecken und wieder mehr Urlauber ins Land locken zu können.
