Londons Bürgermeister Boris Johnson hat eine radikale Idee für die Umgestaltung der britischen Hauptstadt: Er will den Flughafen Heathrow an den Stadtrand verlegen.
Heathrow ist vor dem Pariser Airport Charles de Gaulle und dem Flughafen Frankfurt die Nummer eins in Europa.

Stattdessen sollen auf dem Gelände von Heathrow Wohnungen gebaut werden, dies sei "eine fantastische Gelegenheit", da London an einem "katastrophalen Mangel an Wohnraum" leide, sagte
Johnson am Montag auf einer Pressekonferenz.
Ein neuer Flughafen mit vier Startbahnen würde der Hauptstadt zudem helfen, im internationalen Luftverkehr auch künftig eine entscheidende Rolle zu spielen.

Die Londoner Flughäfen geraten mehr und mehr an den Rand ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit. Der Bau einer dritten Start- und Landebahn in Heathrow wird jedoch von den Anwohnern abgelehnt. Auch Johnson sagte, eine weitere Startbahn sei "total verrückt".
Stattdessen stellt er sich einen Flughafen im Mündungsgebiet der Themse oder auf einer künstlichen Insel vor.
