Aus Protest gegen US-Präsident Donald Trump hat der mexikanische Künstler Bosco Sodi mitten in New York eine Mauer gebaut. Die Installation im Washington Square Park sollte allerdings nur wenige Stunden nach ihrer Errichtung am Donnerstag wieder verschwinden: Passanten durften die Ziegelsteine entfernen und mit nach Hause nehmen.

At the end of the afternoon, visitors are invited to remove one timber, each one sealed by the artist with the signature, to take home with them. Eine Mauer einreißen
Der Künstler entschloss sich nach Trumps Amtsantritt zu dem Projekt. Im Gegensatz zu Trumps Mauerbau-Plänen an der mexikanischen Grenze habe er zeigen wollen, "wie Menschen, wenn sie zusammenkommen, jede Mauer einreißen können - sei sie mental, politisch oder psychologisch". Die Idee habe er entwickelt, als er mit Handwerkern in Mexiko Ziegelsteine angefertigt und mit ihnen über deren Erfahrungen mit illegaler Einwanderung in die USA gesprochen habe.

Die 1.600 Ziegel der zwei Meter hohen und acht Meter langen Kunstinstallation wurden allesamt in Mexiko handgefertigt und tragen die Signatur des Künstlers. Den ersten Stein entfernte New Yorks Bürgermeister Bill de Blasio.
