US-Zirkus stellte berühmte Elefantenshow nach Kritik von Tierschützern ein. Ticketverkäufe gingen danach zurück.
Letzter Vorhang für die "größte Show der Welt": Der berühmte US-Zirkus Ringling Bros. schließt nach 146 Jahren seine Pforten. Die letzte Vorstellung sei für Mai geplant, teilte Feld Entertainment, Muttergesellschaft des Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, am Samstag mit. Hintergrund seien die hohen Betriebskosten sowie sinkende Besucherzahlen nach dem Ende der Elefantenshows.
Der Zirkus hatte diese im Mai 2016 auf Druck von Tierschützern eingestellt. Der Geschäftsführer von Feld Entertainment, Kenneth Feld, sprach von einer sehr schwierigen Entscheidung. "Der Zirkus und seine Mitarbeiter waren eine stetige Quelle der Inspiration und Freude für mich und meine Familie", sagte er. Der letzte Vorhang soll nun am 21. Mai bei einem Gastspiel des Zirkus in New York fallen.

Tierschützer reagierten erfreut auf die Ankündigung. Nach jahrzehntelangen Protesten sei nun das Ende der "traurigsten Show für wilde Tiere" gekommen, erklärte die Tierschutzorganisation Peta(zur Website)mit Blick auf das Zirkus-Motto "The Greatest Show on Earth". Die Elefantenherde der Ringling Brothers war die größte in der westlichen Welt.
Seit 1871
Die Geschichte des Zirkus begann 1871 mit dem Politiker und Schausteller P.T. Barnum. Sein Unternehmen schloss sich 1919 mit der von fünf Brüdern aus dem Bundesstaat Wisconsin gegründeten Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Show zusammen und wurde zur Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth. Während die Ringling Brothers für das traditionelle Zirkusgeschäft bekannt waren, galt Barnum als "Prinz des Humbug".
