Ausgelassene Freude auf der einen Seite, Kriminalität und Gewalt auf der anderen: Beim Karneval von Notting Hill in London hat es mehr als 400 Festnahmen gegeben. Wie die Polizei am Montag mitteilte, handelte es sich bei den meisten Straftaten während des zweitägigen Fests um Drogen- und Waffendelikte. Die hunderttausenden Teilnehmer und Zuschauer feierten aber überwiegend friedlich.

Laut Polizei gab es am Sonntag und Montag insgesamt vier Messerangriffe und 401 Festnahmen - ungefähr ebenso viele wie im vergangenen Jahr. Außerdem wurden 74 Menschen mit Verletzungen ins Krankenhaus gebracht.
Hunderttausende feierten aber friedlich und ausgelassen den 50. Geburtstag des Musik- und Tanzspektakels. In ausgefallenen Kostümen tanzten sie zu karibischen Klängen durch die Straßen des Londoner Stadtbezirks, einige Besucher schwenkten jamaikanische Fahnen.

"Toll! Wir lieben die Offenheit und wir haben alle getanzt", sagte ein 41-jähriger Geschäftsmann aus Malaysia, Annuar Aziz, der mit seiner Frau und vier Kindern zufällig während eines London-Aufenthalts in den Trubel geraten war. "Wir haben die Musik in unserer Unterkunft in Bayswater gehört und sind ihr gefolgt."
Der Karneval erlebte seine Geburtsstunde im Jahr 1966 als kleines Kinderfest im damals heruntergekommenen Notting Hill, das heute zu den teuersten Stadtteilen von London gehört. Das Kostümfest, das seine Wurzeln in karibischen Musikfestivals der 50er Jahre hat, deren Musik nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von Einwanderern aus früheren britischen Kolonien mit ins Land gebracht wurde, gilt heute als der zweitgrößte Karneval nach der Parade im brasilianischen Rio de Janeiro.
