Tonga: Wirbelsturm zerstört Parlamentsgebäude

Der Wirbelsturm "Gita" hat im Pazifikstaat Tonga schwere Schäden angerichtet. So zerstörte der Sturm unter anderem das Parlamentsgebäude des Inselstaats. Es sei noch schwierig, das ganze Ausmaß der Zerstörungen abzuschätzen, sagten Rettungskräfte am Dienstag. Todesopfer wurden bisher nicht gemeldet.

"Es war eine furchtbare Nacht", sagte Graham Kenna von Tongas Katastrophenmanagementbehörde dem australischen Sender ABC. Eine große Zahl von Gebäuden sei zerstört, auf der gesamten Hauptinsel Tongatapu gebe es keinen Strom, so die Rettungskräfte. Mehrere Menschen wurden Berichten zufolge verletzt, auf Bildern waren Überschwemmungen, weggewehte Dächer und umgerissene Palmen zu sehen.

"Gita", ein Zyklon der zweithöchsten Stufe vier, war mit Windstößen von mehr als 200 Kilometern pro Stunde in der Nacht auf Dienstag auf Tongatapu getroffen. Nach Angaben der britischen Wetterbehörde war es der stärkste Sturm seit 60 Jahren, der über die Insel hinweggezogen war. Tonga besteht aus 45 bewohnten und mehr als 120 unbewohnten Inseln. Auf Tongatapu leben mehr als 70.000 Menschen. Der Sturm zieht nun weiter in Richtung der zu Fidschi gehörenden Lau-Inseln.
