Sieben Wochen nach dem Mord an einer regierungskritischen Journalistin auf Malta sind acht Verdächtige festgenommen worden. Die acht Malteser seien am Montagmorgen in einem gemeinsamen Einsatz an verschiedenen Orten gefasst worden, sagte Maltas Premierminister Joseph Muscat. Sie würden verdächtigt, den Anschlag mit einer Autobombe durchgeführt zu haben. Ob sie auch die Auftraggeber waren, ist unklar.

Die Bloggerin Daphne Caruana Galizia war am 16. Oktober in der Nähe ihres Hauses auf der Mittelmeerinsel getötet worden. Der Anschlag hatte das kleine EU-Land geschockt und auch international Wellen geschlagen. Auf Malta kam es zu Protesten gegen Korruption und gegen eine Unterwanderung des politischen Systems durch Kriminelle.

Die Verdächtigen müssen nun innerhalb der nächsten 48 Stunden befragt werden. Sie seien bereits eine Zeit lang beobachtet worden, fügte Muscat hinzu. An den Ermittlungen seien das FBI, Europol und finnische Sicherheitsbehörde beteiligt gewesen.
