Der 61-jährige Franzose Francis Joyon segelte in fünf Tagen und zwei Stunden allein über den Atlantik - der Rekord war gar nicht sein Ziel.

Der französische Segler Francis Joyon hat am Mittwoch seinen eigenen Weltrekord für die Allein-Überquerung des Atlantiks gebrochen. Der 61-Jährige schaffte es nach Angaben seines Teams in fünf Tagen, zwei Stunden und sieben Minuten von New York nach England - 49 Minuten schneller als vor vier Jahren. Seitdem konnte niemand Joyons Rekord unterbieten.

Joyon hatte sich am 6. Juli in New York auf den Weg gemacht. Am Mittwoch erreichte er die Küste von Cornwall im Südwesten Englands. Die neue Bestzeit war eine Überraschung: Eigentlich wollte Joyon mit dem Trip gar keinen Rekord knacken, sondern nur von einer vorherigen Segelfahrt zurückkehren.

Dieses Jahr hatte Joyon außerdem bereits den Rekord der schnellsten Weltumseglung geknackt. Er war mit einer fünfköpfigen Crew in 40 Tagen um die Welt gesegelt - damit wurde er zum neuen Besitzer der Jules-Verne-Trophäe, benannt nach dem Autor des Literaturklassikers "In 80 Tagen um die Welt".
