Ehemaliges Militärgefängnis in Ljubljana ist heute ein Hostel

Zellen als Zimmer: Mutige können sogar in "Einzelhaft" im Keller übernachten.

Gitter vor Fenstern und Türen, lange Gänge und Gemeinschaftsbäder: In Sloweniens Hauptstadt Ljubljana können Touristen in einem ehemaligen Militärgefängnis absteigen. Mehr als 80 einheimische und internationale Künstler verwandelten die Zellen in 20 originelle Hostelzimmer. Betrieben wird die Unterkunft von einer Studentenorganisation nach ökologischen und sozialverträglichen Standards.

Das bunte Gebäude nicht weit vom Zentrum wurde 1882 von der österreichisch-ungarischen Besatzungsarmee gebaut und bis zum Zerfall Jugoslawiens Anfang der 1990er-Jahre als Militärgefängnis genutzt.

Als die jugoslawische Teilrepublik 1991 unabhängig wurde, bewahrte eine Gruppe von Künstlern und Hausbesetzern das Gebäude vor dem Abriss und eröffnete 2003 das Hostel "Celica" (Slowenisch für Zelle).

Die Zimmer mit Gittern an Tür und Fenstern werden den Gästen von der Rezeption zugewiesen, so wie auch die Häftlinge damals ihre Zellen nicht aussuchen konnten. Und das alles kostenfrei, wie die Website witzelt.

Im Gegensatz zu früher bekommen die Insassen ihre Zimmerschlüssel jedoch ausgehändigt. Die meisten der alten Zellen sind zu Zwei- und Dreibettzimmern umgebaut, doch es gibt auch zwei Schlafsäle für zwölf und sechs Zimmer mit jeweils fünf Betten.

Lipovec betonte, das "Celica" sei kein typisches Rucksackhotel der Altersgruppe der 18- bis 25-Jährigen - hier übernachten auch Familien und Ältere, um die diesjährige Umwelthauptstadt Europas zu besichtigen.

"Leute, die ins 'Celica' kommen, sind nicht immer Reisende mit niedrigem Budget", betonte sie. "Es sind Leute, die bereit sind, mehr zu zahlen, weil sie wissen, dass sie mehr dafür bekommen."

Russel Pineda aus Kalifornien ist begeistert: "Allein seine Geschichte, dass es vorher ein Gefängnis war, und wie sie es in ein Hostel umgewandelt haben, ist erstaunlich. Hier zu übernachten ist großartig", sagte der 28-Jährige. Auch der 22-jährige Wirtschaftsstudent Minjae Kwon aus Korea findet: "Es ist ein Glücksfall, hier übernachten zu können."

Als erstes Hostel weltweit wurde das "Celica", das noch immer von einer Studentenorganisation verwaltet wird, mit dem Gold Travelife-Zertifikat für Nachhaltigkeit im Tourismus ausgezeichnet: Neben Recycling-Maßnahmen und der Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien werden dafür auch die Einhaltung der Menschenrechte, der Kinderschutz und die Bemühungen in der Mitarbeiterfürsorge geprüft.

"Es geht darum, dass man sich Gedanken macht, wie die Menschen vor Ort profitieren können, und dass man sich der Kostbarkeit und Bedeutung der Umwelt vor Ort bewusst ist", so Lipovec.

Ganz Mutige wagen sich in den Keller, wo zwei winzige Zellen für Isolationshaft erhalten wurden - kalt und fensterlos und mit Original-Graffiti und Kratzern verzweifelter Häftlinge an der Wand. "Vor drei Jahren kam ein ehemaliger Häftling anlässlich unseres zehnjährigen Jubliäums", erzählte Lipovec. "Für ihn war es ein Wechselbad der Gefühle."
